Barnaby's Brave Orange
Barnaby was a small bear with very big paws and an even bigger heart. Every afternoon, he would hide behind the old oak tree and watch the forest animals play baseball in the sunny meadow. The squirrels would hit the ball so far it disappeared into the clouds. The rabbits would run around the bases faster than falling leaves. Barnaby sighed and looked at his clumsy paws. He could never be brave enough to join them.
One morning, Barnaby discovered something strange glowing near the creek. It was an orange – but not just any orange. This fruit shimmered like a tiny sun, with little sparkles dancing around its rind. An old turtle popped her head from the water. "That's a Magic Sunshine Orange," she said. "It's filled with bravery vitamins that give you the courage to do anything you dream of."
Barnaby's eyes grew wide. He ate the orange, and suddenly, he felt warm all over – like he had swallowed a piece of sunshine itself. His paws didn't feel so clumsy anymore. His heart felt as light as a dandelion seed floating on the breeze.
That afternoon, Barnaby walked to the baseball meadow. The animals stopped and stared. "Can I play?" Barnaby asked, his voice only shaking a little. The squirrel captain nodded and handed him a baseball bat.
Barnaby stepped up to the plate. The pitcher threw the ball – and Barnaby swung with all his might. CRACK! The ball soared through the sky, higher than any squirrel had ever hit it. The animals cheered so loudly that the birds joined in with their songs.
Barnaby played every day after that, and he became the best baseball player in the whole forest. But sometimes, late at night, he would wonder – was it really the magic orange that made him brave? Or had the courage been inside him all along, just waiting for someone to believe in him?
The old turtle just winked whenever he asked. Some secrets, she said, taste sweeter when you keep them to yourself.
