Barnaby's Big Splash

waterbearbaseball

Barnaby was no ordinary bear. While other bears spent their days fishing in the river or splashing in mountain streams, Barnaby had a secret dream—he loved baseball. Every afternoon, he would peek through the trees as the forest animals played America's favorite game in the sunny meadow. His heart fluttered like butterfly wings whenever he saw the ball soar through the air.

But Barnaby had a big problem. He was terrified of water. Even a puddle made him nervous, and the river beyond the meadow? Absolutely not. His mother called him ' silly,' but Barnaby couldn't help it. What if he couldn't swim? What if the water was too deep? These worries kept him safely on dry land.

One hot summer day, something magical happened. Rabbit hopped over to where Barnaby was hiding behind a giant oak tree. 'Barnaby! We need you! Our team is down by three runs, and Bear can't play today because he hurt his paw catching a fly ball yesterday. Will you be our backup bear?'

Barnaby's stomach did flip-flops. He wanted to say yes more than anything, but then he remembered—the baseball field was right next to the little creek that wound through the meadow. What if the ball landed near the water? What if he had to run through the shallow stream to catch it?

'I... I can't,' Barnaby whispered, his ears drooping. 'I'm afraid of the water.'

Rabbit's nose twitched thoughtfully. 'But Barnaby, the water's only ankle-deep. And besides, your team needs you. Sometimes being brave doesn't mean not being scared. It means doing what matters even when you ARE scared.' That made Barnaby pause. Doing what matters even when you're scared?

Taking a deep breath, Barnaby lumbered onto the field. The animals cheered! He put on the team's cap and took his position in right field—closest to the creek.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, a squirrel hit a high fly ball right toward the creek! Barnaby's heart pounded as he ran. The ball was going to land... right in the water!

Barnaby could feel the cool mist as he approached the creek's edge. This was it. He remembered Rabbit's words about being brave. With a mighty roar, Barnaby splashed right into the shallow water—paws, fur, and all—and caught the ball!

'You did it!' the animals shouted as they carried Barnaby on their shoulders. He had won the game! Even more amazing, Barnaby discovered that the water wasn't so scary after all. In fact, it felt refreshing and wonderful on such a hot day.

From that day on, Barnaby became the best baseball-playing bear in the forest, and he was never afraid to make a big splash again—whether in the creek or in life!
