Barnaby and the Zombie Goldfish

Barnaby was not like other cats. While his brothers and sisters napped in sunny patches, Barnaby loved **swimming**. Every morning, the orange tabby kitten would creep to the edge of Mrs. Higgins' pond and dip his white paws into the cool water.

One afternoon, Barnaby spotted something strange. A little **goldfish** floated at the surface, completely still. Its scales glittered like tiny pieces of sunshine, but it didn't move.

"Hello?" Barnaby meowed, nudging the fish gently with his nose. "Are you okay?"

The goldfish's eye popped open. "I'm not a regular fish," it bubbled. "I'm a **zombie** goldfish! I float like this when I'm thinking deep thoughts."

Barnaby's eyes grew wide. "A zombie? Does that mean you're scary?"

"Nope!" The goldfish did a silly little flip. "It just means I like resting and floating. My great-great-grandfish was a zombie too. We're very peaceful."

The **cat** sat by the pond's edge, mesmerized. "Can I be your friend?"

"Only if you promise not to eat me," the goldfish joked. "I'm Finnegan, by the way."

"I'm Barnaby, and I promise!" Barnaby purred. "I've never had a fish friend before."

Every day after that, Barnaby visited Finnegan. They played games—Barnaby would swim in the shallow end while Finnegan raced beside him. They shared stories about cats who climbed too high and fish who jumped too far.

One day, Barnaby arrived at the pond to find Finnegan floating still as a stone again.

"Finnegan!" Barnaby cried. "Are you okay? Are you being a zombie again?"

Finnegan's tail fin twitched. "I'm just thinking, Barnaby. About how lucky I am to have a friend who's different from me. Cats and fish aren't supposed to be friends, you know."

Barnaby dipped his paw into the water, letting ripples spread across the surface. "Maybe that's what makes it special. Being different doesn't matter when you really care about someone."

Finnegan smiled—yes, fish can smile, if you look closely enough. "Exactly. That's the best thought I've ever had while zombie-floating."

And so the swimming cat and the zombie goldfish remained best friends, proving that the greatest friendships come from the most unexpected places.
