Barnaby and the Storm Pond Wish
Barnaby was a small spotted dog with a very big heart. Every evening, he would trot to the old garden pond behind his house to watch the goldfish swimming in the murky water. But tonight was different.
The sky turned dark and purple. Rain began to fall, first in drops, then in sheets. A brilliant flash of lightning crackled across the clouds, and suddenly - ZAP! - a bolt struck the pond right where Barnaby was standing.
But Barnaby didn't run away. He stayed frozen, watching in amazement as the water began to glow with a soft golden light. Bubbles rose to the surface, and one tiny goldfish floated up, hovering in the air like it was weightless.
"Thank you for not leaving me," the goldfish said in a voice like tinkling bells. "The lightning gave me magic powers, but only for one hour. I can grant you one wish - any wish at all!"
Barnaby's tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled. He thought about bones. He thought about chasing squirrels. He thought about an endless supply of treats. But then he looked at the shivering goldfish, glowing weaker and weaker as the minutes ticked away.
"I wish," Barnaby said softly, "that you could live in any pond you want, and swim safely with all your friends forever."
The goldfish's eyes widened. "You would waste your wish on... me?"
"Friends help friends," Barnaby said simply.
The goldfish glowed brighter than ever before, then burst into a thousand tiny sparkles that rained down on the pond. When Barnaby looked into the water, he saw hundreds of goldfish swimming joyfully - and in the center, one fish with a tiny lightning-shaped mark on its side.
The next morning, the sun came out. Barnaby visited the pond, and the special goldfish swam to the surface and splashed him. They remained best friends forever, and Barnaby learned that sometimes the best wish is the one you make for someone else.
The End.
