Barnaby and the Moon-Orange
Barnaby was a small golden dog with floppy ears and a very big dream. Every night, he would sit by the edge of the Silver Lake, watching the moon reflect on the water. "Someday," he would whisper, "I'll catch that beautiful orange moon."
One warm summer evening, something magical happened. A round orange fruit rolled down the hill and splashed into the water right in front of Barnaby. It bobbed and floated, glowing in the twilight like a tiny moon.
Barnaby's tail thumped with excitement. But then he heard a sad squeak. A little mouse named Pip sat at the water's edge, tears in her eyes. "That was my orange," she sniffled. "I was saving it for my little brother's birthday."
Barnaby looked at the floating orange, then at Pip's sad face. His heart made a decision. He waded into the cool water, paddling with all his might. The water felt wonderful against his fur, but he didn't stop. He swam until his nose nudged the orange, then gently pushed it back to shore.
"Here," Barnaby said, shaking water from his ears. "I saved your moon-orange."
Pip's eyes widened. "You didn't keep it for yourself?"
"Some things are better when shared," Barnaby replied with a doggy grin.
That night, Pip invited Barnaby to celebrate her brother's birthday. They shared the sweet, juicy orange together. And as Barnaby licked the last bit of juice from his nose, he looked up at the real orange moon above and realized something wonderful: the best treasures aren't the ones we keep, but the ones we give away.
From then on, every full moon, Barnaby and Pip would sit by the water, sharing stories and friendship — and that was more magical than any moon-orange could ever be.
