Barnaby and the Lightning Wish

Barnaby was a small brown dog with floppy ears and a very big problem. He couldn't swim. While his friends splashed in the creek on hot summer days, Barnaby sat on the grass, watching and wishing.

One afternoon, a storm rolled in. The sky turned purple, and CRACK—a bolt of lightning struck the old garden pond.

Barnaby ran to investigate. There, floating in the water, was his friend Goldie the goldfish. But something was different. Goldie was glowing with a soft golden light!

"Barnaby!" said Goldie. And Barnaby's eyes went wide because goldfish don't talk. "The lightning gave me magic powers for one hour! Quick, climb on my back!"

Barnaby hesitated, but Goldie had grown to the size of a small canoe. Carefully, Barnaby climbed onto the goldfish's shimmering back.

They flew into the storm clouds, higher and higher, until they reached a mysterious floating island. In the center stood a magnificent sphinx made of clouds and starlight.

"Welcome, brave friends," said the sphinx in a voice like gentle thunder. "I guard the Wish of the Storm. Answer my riddle, and you may each make one wish."

"We're ready!" said Barnaby.

"I have scales but no fins," said the sphinx. "I have wings but cannot fly. I sparkle in the dark but have no light of my own. What am I?"

Barnaby and Goldie whispered together. Suddenly, Barnaby's tail wagged. "A snowflake!"

"Correct!" The sphinx smiled, and rainbow sparkles filled the air. "What are your wishes?"

Goldie thought carefully. "I wish to stay big enough that Barnaby and I can always have adventures together."

"And I," said Barnaby, "wish for the courage to try new things, even when they scare me."

The sphinx nodded. "These are good wishes. They come from friendship and bravery—the strongest magic of all."

POOF! Barnaby felt braver instantly. Goldie remained her magical size. And as they flew home under clearing skies, Barnaby realized something wonderful: he hadn't just found adventure—he'd found that courage isn't about not being scared. It's about being scared and doing something brave anyway.

From that day on, Barnaby tried new things every day. Sometimes he failed. Sometimes he succeeded. But he never forgot: the best adventures are the ones you share with friends, and the bravest thing you can do is simply try.
