Barnaby and the Lightning Pool
Barnaby was a fluffy orange cat who loved to watch the backyard pool. Every day, he sat on the stone edge, staring at the sparkling blue water. But Barnaby had a secret wish — he wanted to swim like the children who splashed and laughed all summer long.
One evening, as dark clouds gathered overhead, Barnaby noticed something strange. A single goldfish swam near the pool's edge, its scales shimmering like tiny stars. Unlike other fish, this goldfish seemed to be watching Barnaby too.
"Hello, little friend," the goldfish bubbled, and Barnaby's eyes grew wide as dinner plates. Fishes didn't talk!
"I'm Goldie," said the fish. "And tonight, during the lightning storm, something magical will happen."
Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the pool, turning the water into glowing rainbow colors. But it wasn't scary — the water looked warm and inviting, like liquid sunshine.
"Jump in!" Goldie called. "The lightning magic will let you swim for one whole hour!"
Barnaby's heart pounded. Cats were supposed to hate water. But something about Goldie's smile made him brave. He took a deep breath and — SPLASH!
The water felt like a warm hug. Barnaby paddled around, discovering he could swim perfectly! Goldie guided him to see magical treasures: glowing pearls, singing seashells, and flowers that bloomed underwater.
"This is wonderful!" Barnaby purred. "But why did you share this with me?"
Goldie smiled. "Because you visit me every day. You sit quietly and never try to catch me. True friendship isn't about taking what you want — it's about appreciating what makes others happy."
Barnaby felt warm inside, warmer than the magical pool. He had wanted to catch Goldie so many times, but had always been kind instead.
When the rainbow water faded and the storm passed, Barnaby curled up on his favorite towel. He couldn't wait to visit Goldie tomorrow — not to swim or catch her, but just to say hello to his wonderful friend.
And every time lightning flashed during summer storms, Barnaby would smile, knowing magic was waiting in the pool for those who were kind.
