Barnaby and the Lake of Kindness
Barnaby was a bear who loved swimming more than anything. Every morning, he'd splash into the crystal-clear lake behind his house, doing backstrokes and cannonballs until his fur was soaked through.
One sunny day, something unusual came bobbing toward him. An orange!
"Hello there!" said the orange, surprising Barnaby completely. "I'm Ollie!" The orange had a cheerful face and tiny arms that waved as he floated.
Barnaby had never met a talking fruit before. "I'm Barnaby! Do you like swimming too?"
"I LOVE it!" Ollie cheered. "But this lake is special. It's filled with magic vitamins that make you strong and kind!"
Just then, a slow-moving creature emerged from the forest. It shuffled and groaned, looking sad and tired. Barnaby gasped. "Is that… a zombie?"
The zombie-looking creature dragged its feet, head hanging low. It looked lonely and miserable.
"Don't be scared," Ollie whispered. "That's Zara. She's not a scary zombie. She just forgot how to be happy because no one would play with her."
Barnaby's heart went out to Zara. He swam to the edge of the lake. "Want to come swimming with us? The water has magic vitamins that make you feel better!"
Zara's eyes widened. "Really?"
Barnaby nodded. "And Ollie says they make you kind too. But you're already kind, Zara. I can feel it."
Tears filled Zara's eyes as she waded into the orange-tinted water. As she swam, something magical happened. Her gray skin turned rosy, her eyes brightened, and she began to smile and laugh.
"The vitamins didn't make me kind," Zara said, splashing Barnaby playfully. "You did. You believed in me when I'd forgotten how to believe in myself."
From that day on, the three friends swam together every morning. Barnaby learned that the scariest-looking creatures sometimes just need a friend. And the magic vitamins? They were real — but the real magic was friendship, kindness, and never judging someone by how they looked on the outside.
