Barnaby and the Halloween Surprise

Leo loved Halloween more than anything in the world. He loved the costumes, the candy, and especially the magic in the air. But this year, something felt different.

His golden retriever, Barnaby, trotted beside him as they walked through the neighborhood. The dog's tail wagged excitedly, jingling the pumpkin-shaped charm on his collar. Leo's dad had given him his old iPhone to use as a flashlight while trick-or-treating.

"Stay close, Barnaby," Leo said, but the dog had already spotted something peculiar.

Barnaby pulled gently toward the old Wilson house, the one everyone said was haunted. Leo hesitated, but Barnaby kept tugging. Finally, Leo followed his furry friend around back.

There, sitting on the porch steps, was the saddest zombie Leo had ever seen. It wore tattered clothes and green face paint, but instead of looking scary, it looked like it might cry.

"Are you okay?" Leo asked, shining his iPhone flashlight gently.

The zombie looked up. It was a girl about Leo's age, dressed in a costume that had somehow gotten ruined. Her makeup was smudged, and her costume was torn.

"I wanted to trick-or-treat," she sniffled, "but everyone got scared and ran away. My name's Maya, and I just moved here."

Barnaby immediately trotted over and rested his head on Maya's knee. She giggled and scratched behind his ears.

"That's Barnaby," Leo said. "He's the best judge of character. If he likes you, you're definitely not scary."

Leo's eyes lit up. "I have an idea!" Using his iPhone, he took a picture of Maya's costume. Then he called his dad, who was a costume designer. Together, they fixed Maya's zombie outfit and made it even better.

That night, the three new friends went trick-or-treating together. Maya's zombie costume was amazing, Barnaby wore a silly cape, and Leo was a wizard. Nobody ran away from Maya anymore—in fact, she got the most candy because her costume was so cool!

Leo learned something important that Halloween: sometimes the things that seem scary at first are just people who need a friend. And thanks to Barnaby's friendly nose and a little creativity, he found the best friend he could have asked for.
