Barnaby and the Fallen Star
Barnaby was a bear with a secret fear. While other bears splashed and played in the sparkling river, Barnaby stayed on the grassy bank. He loved watching the water dance in the sunlight, but the thought of swimming made his tummy feel tight and twisty.
One warm summer evening, just as the sun began painting the sky in shades of orange and purple, Barnaby saw something magical. A tiny star fell from the heavens and landed with a soft plop in the river near the bank where Barnaby sat.
The star didn't fizzle out like shooting stars usually do. Instead, it bobbed on the water's surface, glowing with a gentle silver light. Barnaby leaned closer, his big brown eyes wide with wonder.
"Hello?" whispered Barnaby. The star's light flickered like a happy heartbeat.
"I'm stuck," said the star, and Barnaby was surprised he could understand it. The star's voice sounded like wind chimes and quiet rivers. "I wanted to see what running felt like on solid ground. All my life I've been twinkling in the sky, watching bears run and play. But now I'm trapped in this water, and I can't get back home."
Barnaby's heart went out to the little star. "I wish I could help. But I'm afraid of water. I've never gone swimming in my whole life."
The star's light swirled thoughtfully. "What if we help each other? I could light up the water so it wouldn't seem scary. And if you can carry me back to the highest mountain, I could jump back into the sky."
Barnaby thought about it. The star needed him. And maybe, just maybe, having a friend would make the water less frightening.
"Okay," said Barnaby, taking a deep breath. "But you have to promise to stay close."
Together they made a plan. The star would glow brightly in the water, showing Barnaby that nothing scary lurked beneath. And Barnaby would carry the star in a waterproof leaf pouch to the highest peak.
When Barnaby finally stepped into the river, something wonderful happened. The star's light made the water sparkle like diamonds. Barnaby discovered that swimming felt like flying through liquid starlight. He wasn't afraid anymore — he was glorious.
After days of practicing, Barnaby became a strong swimmer. Then he carried his new friend all the way up Mount Misty Peak. When they reached the top, the star thanked Barnaby with the warmest glow.
"You gave me the greatest gift," said the star. "You showed me that friendship is braver than fear. Now I'll shine extra bright every night, just for you."
And to this day, if you look up at the stars and see one twinkling extra brightly, that's Barnaby's friend — still keeping its promise to a bear who learned to be brave.
