Barnaby and the Crystal Pyramid
Barnaby was a small bear with the most extraordinary hair. While other bears had sleek, shiny fur, Barnaby's hair stuck out in every direction like golden sunshine exploding from his head. The other bears laughed, but Barnaby's mother said, 'Your hair is magical, my little one. One day, you'll see why.'
One hot afternoon, Barnaby followed a sparkling blue butterfly deep into the forest. He came to a clearing he had never seen before, where a magnificent crystal pyramid rose from the earth. It shimmered like a giant diamond in the sunlight.
Barnaby approached cautiously. Water trickled down the pyramid's sides in little rivers that pooled at the bottom. But something was wrong — the water was murky and sad, and the crystal pyramid had grown dull and gray.
An old turtle appeared from behind a mossy rock. 'This is the Crystal of Life,' she rasped. 'Long ago, pure mountain water flowed through it, giving life to the entire forest. But a rockslide blocked the spring, and now the water cannot flow.'
'How can I help?' Barnaby asked.
'The spring is high up the mountain,' said the turtle. 'Only someone very brave — and very fluffy — can reach through the narrow cave to unblock it.'
Barnaby climbed and climbed until he reached the blocked spring. His fluffy hair snagged on rocks, tugged by the wind, but he pressed on. At the back of a narrow tunnel, he found the problem: a giant bolder had trapped the water behind it.
He pushed and pushed. His big paws slipped. He was ready to give up when he remembered his mother's words about his magical hair.
Barnaby took a deep breath and wedged himself into the tunnel. His thick, wild hair filled every crack and crevice like a sponge. He pushed with all his might, and his fluffy hair acted like a lever! With a mighty groan, the boulder shifted.
WHOOSH! Crystal-clear water burst forth, flowing down the mountain and straight into the pyramid. The crystal began to glow, first pink, then blue, then golden yellow. The beautiful light spread through the whole forest.
When Barnaby returned to the clearing, all the animals were cheering. The old turtle smiled. 'Your hair IS magical, Barnaby. Because you never gave up — and because you helped others — your greatest 'flaw' became your greatest gift.'
From that day on, Barnaby wore his wild, fluffy hair with pride. And whenever he saw the crystal pyramid shining in the distance, he remembered: what makes us different is often exactly what makes us special.
