Bare Skin at Midnight

swimmingcatsphinx

The pool water was colder than she expected, but Elena kept swimming anyway. Each stroke was a rebellion against the empty hotel room upstairs, against the text message she'd sent three hours ago that still hadn't been answered. The marriage counselor had called it 'a trial separation,' but Elena knew the truth: she was drowning in twenty years of accumulated silences.

She surfaced, gasping, and saw it perched on the pool deck—a sphinx cat, its naked, wrinkled skin glowing palely in the moonlight. It regarded her with ancient, unreadable eyes, like some mythological creature posing riddles she couldn't articulate. The cat's vulnerability—its exposed skin, its complete lack of defenses—struck something deep inside her.

"You too?" she whispered, treading water. "Lost your armor?"

The cat dipped its head. Maybe it understood. Maybe it was just waiting for her to leave so it could drink from the pool's edge.

Elena had come to Egypt alone, nursing fantasies of exotic adventure and sexual awakening, anything to pierce the numbness. Instead, she'd spent four days avoiding mirrors and weeping in hotel showers. The real Sphinx had disappointed her—crowded, tourist-choked, smaller than photographs. She'd expected transcendence. She'd gotten gift shops and lines.

The sphinx cat stretched, its spine arching like a question mark. Elena realized she was tired of treading water, literally and metaphorically. She swam to the edge and pulled herself up, water streaming off her body like the last twenty years of her life. The cat didn't flee. It sat perfectly still, watching her with that sphinx-like patience, as if her naked, dripping skin were the most natural thing in the world.

"Thank you," she said to the creature. "For the company."

She didn't go back upstairs to check her phone. She sat on the pool deck beside the sphinx cat, both of them bare under the Egyptian moon, both of them waiting—for what, she didn't know. But for the first time in years, she wasn't afraid of the answer.
