Bare Before the Storm

Elena's iPhone vibrated against the marble vanity, her boss's third notification of the morning glowing across the screen. She ignored it, reaching instead for her father's fedora—a relic she'd stolen from his closet three days after the funeral, when the smell of his cigarettes still clung to the felt like a ghost refusing to leave.

Outside, lightning fractured the sky above downtown Chicago. Elena pressed her forehead against the hotel window, watching employees scatter below like kicked-up gravel. The corporate retreat had been her idea—her desperate bid to prove she could lead after her father's heart attack turned the family business into her reluctant burden.

Her phone lit up again. *We need to talk about the Q3 projections.*

Elena's fingers trembled as she typed her resignation. Just ten words: *I can't do this anymore. Find someone else.*

The sky opened.

She grabbed her coat and headed for the terrace doors, leaving her phone on the vanity, leaving the hat on the hook by the door. She'd worn both for months—armor against a world that expected her to become someone she wasn't.

Rain soaked her blazer instantly. Lightning flashed again, closer now, and she threw her head back and laughed. Her father would have hated this—his pragmatic daughter standing in a storm, ruining a suit that cost more than his first car.

But for the first time in years, Elena felt something like hope.

Her phone would be found eventually. The hat would stay in the closet. Tomorrow she'd book a flight to somewhere with fewer expectations. For now, she just wanted to feel something real.
