Bad Hair Day Strikeout

dogbaseballhairbull

Maya's mom had given her the worst haircut in human history. Like, actually tragic. She'd tried to fix Maya's split ends but somehow created a mullet situation that defied all logic and reason. Maya spent three days with her hair in a messy bun, avoiding everyone and everything.

Then Connor's invitation came: baseball in the park with the squad.

Maya's stomach did flips. Connor was cute. The kind of cute where you forget how to form sentences. But showing up with this hair disaster? That was social suicide waiting to happen.

"You're being dramatic," her best friend Kai texted. "It's not that bad."

"My hair has more layers than your grandma's birthday cake. It's over."

But Maya's golden retriever, Buster, had other plans. He'd been obsessing over the neighbors' new puppy - a tiny fluff ball named Princess - and kept bringing over "gifts" to win her favor. Socks. Stuffed animals. An entire sandwich wrapper.

Saturday arrived. Maya's hair was pulled back so tight it gave her a headache. She wore her favorite backwards cap - problem solved, kinda. The baseball field behind the middle school was already buzzing with kids.

Connor waved her over. His smile was unfairly gorgeous. "You made it!"

"Wouldn't miss it." Maya's voice cracked. Cool.

She stepped up to bat first, feeling all eyes on her. The cap slipped. A chunk of her unfortunate mullet flopped forward. Someone giggled.

"First pitch!" Connor yelled from the mound.

The ball came soaring. Maya swung with everything she had - and missed.

"Strike one!"

Second pitch. Missed again.

Then something white and fuzzy came bolting across the field. Buster. Carrying something in his mouth. Chaos erupted.

"Buster, NO!" Maya sprinted after her dog, now chasing Connor around the bases like it was the most normal thing in the world.

"Is that... underwear?" Kai yelled, dying.

It was. Princess's underwear. Don't ask where Buster got it.

By the time Maya caught Buster, the entire baseball game had dissolved into hysterics. Connor was laughing so hard he was wheezing. Her hat was gone. The mullet was free. The underwear had been retrieved.

"So," Connor said, catching his breath, "that was the best thing that's ever happened at baseball practice."

Maya groaned. "My life is actually a joke."

"Nah." Connor grinned, gesturing at her hair. "Honestly? The mullet kinda works on you. Like, unexpectedly iconic."

Maya blinked. "You're just saying that because I chased down a dog stealing underwear."

"That was definitely part of it." He winked. "Same time next week?"

Maya's cheeks burned, but for the first time all week, she didn't want to disappear. "Bull you're just being nice."

"Scout's honor." Connor held up three fingers. "Bring the dog. He's way more entertaining than baseball anyway."
