Bad Hair Day Glow-Up
My hair looked like a cat had attacked it. Actually, scratch that—my cat, Luna, literally HAD attacked it. I stared in the mirror, running my hands through the frizzy disaster that used to be a perfectly acceptable lob. "Great. Just great."
Junior prom was in four hours, and I was already spiraling. I'd spent forty-five minutes trying to salvage my hair, but nothing was working. Luna wound around my legs, purring innocently like she hadn't single-handedly destroyed my social life. My dog, Cooper, chose that exact moment to trot in and enthusiastically shake himself, sending a cloud of golden dog hair floating onto my black dress.
Panic started to rise, hot and familiar. But then my little brother Jay popped his head in, wearing his signature smirk. "Yo, you look like you're about to cry over some frizz. Seriously?" He leaned against the doorframe, spinning a basketball on his finger. "It's just hair, Maya. Everyone's gonna be too busy worrying about themselves to notice yours."
He disappeared, then returned with clippers and a grin. "Trust me. Fresh start."
I hesitated, but Jay was weirdly confident. So I let him buzz my hair into a pixie cut while Luna batted at the falling locks like they were toys and Cooper danced around like he was at a concert. Twenty minutes later, I looked... different. Naked without my hair curtain, but different.
When I walked into prom that night, heads actually turned. Not because my hair was perfect—because I finally didn't care. My friends' jaws dropped. "Wait, when did you get so bold?" Sarah asked, giving me this look of total respect.
I realized she was right. Hair grows back, but confidence? That's the real glow-up.
