Bad Hair Day Chronicles

Maya stared at her reflection and wanted to scream. Her mom's friend who was "totally qualified" to cut hair had butchered it. What was supposed to be subtle layers turned into a choppy disaster that made her look like she'd stuck her head in a blender.

"It's not that bad," Chloe texted when Maya sent a pitiful selfie. "You can just wear a hat."

A hat. Right. Because nothing says I'm secure in my identity like hiding under a beanie at Jake Anderson's party. Jake, who she'd been lowkey flirting with for weeks. Jake, who would definitely notice her looking like a hot mess.

Her cat Luna wound around her legs, purring like she knew Maya was spiraling. Even the cat was judging her.

"You don't understand," Maya complained to Luna. "This isn't just hair. This is my whole social life."

Chloe showed up an hour later with a squad. They brought different hats, hair clips, and confidence that Maya desperately needed.

"Okay, first of all," Chloe said, assessing the damage. "It's giving edge. It's giving I-did-this-on-purpose. We lean into it."

Maya's stomach did that thing it did whenever she was about to do something terrifying. "But Jake—"

"Jake thinks you're cute regardless. He's literally told me like four times."

Maya felt herself actually smile for the first time since the haircut incident.

The party was exactly what she needed. Jake barely noticed the hair—too busy being awkward and adorable and telling her about his embarrassing obsession with vintage video games. And when he finally did mention it? "I like it. It's different. You look cool."

Different. Not bad. Not weird. Different.

Later, Maya caught her reflection in a mirror and actually didn't hate it. The hair was growing on her, literally and figuratively. Sometimes the things you think will ruin everything end up being the things that make you realize you were fine all along.

"You're not wearing the hat," Chloe observed.

Maya shook her head. "Nah. I'm over it."

Her friend grinned. "That's my girl."

And maybe the haircut wasn't perfect, but honestly? Neither was she. And that was kind of the point.
