Bad Hair Day Apocalypse

Maya stared at her reflection and wanted to cry. The haircut was supposed to be layers—instead, she looked like a hedge that had been attacked by a lawnmower. Her hair, previously her one reliable feature, now stuck out at angles that defied physics.

"You look... distinctive," her best friend Leo said, which was basically code for "wow that's bad."

"Thanks, Leo. Really selling it."

Friday night. Chloe's party. The one every cool person would be at. And Maya was debating whether to show up looking like this or fake sudden illness and spend the weekend watching Netflix in her room, feeling like a total zombie either way.

The week had been brutal anyway. Finals had turned everyone into walking dead—teachers assigning work like they didn't comprehend the concept of sleep. Maya had survived on caffeine and anxiety, which honestly wasn't sustainable.

"Just go," Leo said. "You're overthinking it."

"Easy for you to say. Your hair doesn't look like it got into a fight with a curling iron and lost."

But then the lightning struck—literally. The sky outside Maya's window cracked open, a flash of white that illuminated everything in her room for one perfect second. Including her phone, which had just buzzed.

A text from Sam. The sphinx of sophomore year. Mysterious, intimidating, unapproachable Sam, who sat in the back of English class wearing oversized hoodies and said approximately three words per week.

"hey. u going to chloes's?"

Maya stared at her phone. Then texted back: "yeah but my hair is a disaster lol"

"same. bad haircut. mine's worse."

Maya actually laughed. The sphinx had bad hair too? The mysterious Sam, who seemed to glide through life effortlessly, was also stressing about party appearance?

"we should match," Sam texted. "disaster hair squad."

"disaster hair squad," Maya typed back, grinning. "meet there?"

"already outside."

And just like that, Maya grabbed her jacket. Her hair was still weird. She was still exhausted. But somehow none of it mattered anymore.

Sometimes the worst days turn into the best ones. Maya grabbed her umbrella and headed out, disaster hair and all.
