Architect of Shadows
Maya stood before the floor-to-ceiling window of her corner office, watching the rain sheet down the glass like a waterfall drowning the city below. At forty-two, she'd finally ascended to the apex of the corporate pyramid she'd spent two decades climbing—only to discover the foundation was rotten.
The **water** damage from last night's storm had revealed itself in a dark stain spreading across her pristine white ceiling. Like her marriage, it had been hidden beneath fresh paint until the pressure became too great.
Her phone buzzed. Unknown number.
"Ms. Chen? I'm with private security. We've completed our investigation."
Maya's fingers went cold against the phone. "And?"
"Your husband is indeed a **spy**. Colette Enterprises hired him three years ago to infiltrate your R&D division. He's been feeding them classified schematics."
She swallowed hard. Three years. That was when they'd renewed their vows in Cabo.
The office door opened. Ethan walked in with that effortless grin that had first charmed her at a industry conference. He set a coffee on her desk. "You okay, Maya? You look like you've seen a ghost."
She studied him—really studied him—for the first time in months. The way his eyes darted to the file folder on her desk. The slight tension in his shoulders. He was like a **fox** in the henhouse, sleek and predatory, disguised as something harmless.
"Just thinking about the merger," she said smoothly. "Marcus is riding me hard about the timeline."
"That old **bull** never lets up, does he?" Ethan leaned against her desk, invading her space. "Need me to smooth things over?"
Maya almost laughed. He wanted access to the merger documents now. He'd already stolen everything else.
"No," she said, standing and walking to the window. "I've handled Marcus. I've handled everything, actually."
She turned to face him. "Did you know that pyramids were built by slaves who believed they were building something sacred? They died in the sand while the pharaohs grew fat."
"Maya, you're talking strangely."
"Am I?" She picked up her phone. "I'm just wondering how it feels to be the one buried instead of the one standing above."
The security team would be here in five minutes. The merger was off. Colette Enterprises would face indictment. And Ethan—
Ethan's phone pinged. His face went pale as he read whatever message had come through. Recognition, sudden and sharp.
"Maya, I can explain—"
"Don't," she said softly. "Just don't."
She thought about the architects who built pyramids to defy death, only to have their bodies forgotten while monuments rose in their name. This was her monument now. She would destroy it all to bring it down.
The rain kept falling, washing everything away, and somewhere beneath it all, something new might eventually grow.
